Aygul Bakanova

Aygul Bakanova was born in 1982 and grew up in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. She earned her BA in International Journalism, before continuing her studies in Moscow, specializing in script writing for television. She embarked on a career writing for Russia’s biggest television stations. After 4 years of experience in Moscow, Aygul started the MA Filmmaking course at the London Film School. During the course she wrote and directed several short films and a documentary. For her graduation project Aygul wrote, directed and co-produced a short story set in rural Kyrgyzstan. The film was premiered in the International Competition of Locarno Film Festival and has been screened at various film festivals around the world, including Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. Aygul is currently developing her first feature project, a family drama of a young woman coming to terms with a stale marriage set against the complex backdrop of modern Kyrgyz society.
