Chui Mui TAN

Tan Chui Mui was born in 1978 in Sungai Ular, a Malay fishing village in Kuantan, Mui grew up in a Taiwanese family surrounded by the Malay community. Well-read at young age, she started writing a column for a Chinese daily newspaper and soon garnered a following with her distinctive style. Her involvement in filmmaking began in 2002 when she met Amir Muhammad and James Lee. In 2004, she produced Chemman Chaalai (The Gravel Road), the first local Tamil film to be produced in twenty years. In the same year, she also edited Ho Yuhang’s “Sanctuary”, which received special mention in the VPRO Tiger Awards at the Film Festival Rotterdam in 2005. In 2006, she produced both James Lee’s “Before We Fall in Love Again” and Amir Muhammad’s “Apa Khabar Orang Kampung?” In the 11th Pusan International Film Festival, Tan Chui Mui was awarded The Best New Asian Filmmaker of the Year 2006 (New Currents award) and also Fipresci Award (International Film Critics Award) with her debut feature film, Love Conquers All. The film is nominated for VPRO Tiger Awards in the coming 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam, 2007. She is now writing for her next film, “Living Quietly”, which has received the CNC script development grant, and would be produced by Philippe Avril an autobiographic fiction about her destiny as a 50 years old woman.
