Dea KULUMBEGASHVILI

Dea KULUMBEGASHVILI was born and raised in Georgia. She grew up in the remote Caucasus Mountains in the small town of Lagodekhi. Her upbringing in this historic melting pot of various cultures and nationalities, co-existing together in the small town is the primary influence in her vision as a filmmaker. Here, she witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Civil War. It is said that the nature of human beings is most honest in times of crisis. Thus, living in the constant state of changes she witnessed the extreme states of human nature that became the main theme of her work. Dea studied film directing at Columbia University School of the Arts and media studies at The New School in New York.  Her debut short film Invisible Spaces was nominated for Palme D’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2014. It was also the first film from independent Georgia to be part of the official competition at the Cannes International Film Festival. Dea is currently developing her first feature America.
