Juliana Rojas was born in Campinas, Brazil, in 1981. She moved to São Paulo in 1999 to study film at the University of São Paulo. There she met Marco Dutra, and they have been working together ever since. Their graduation short film The White Sheet (O lençol branco) was shown at festivals around the world, including Cannes Cinéfondation in 2005. Their second short A Stem (Um ramo) was selected for the Cannes Critics’ Week in 2007 and won the Kodak Discovery Award for Best Short Film. They also directed four other short films: Concert Number Three (Concerto numero tres), Dressed (Vestida), The Shadows (As sombras) and To Sleep Quietly (Pra eu dormer tranquilo). In 2011, Juliana and Marco’s first feature film – Hard Labor (Trabalhar cansa) – premiered at Cannes – Un Certain Regard. Their second feature film project, called Good Manners (As boas maneiras), is being developed during Juliana’s stay at the Residence. Both are members of Filmes do Caixote, a group of young filmmakers working in constant collaboration.
