Sanjeewa Pushpakumara

Sanjeewa Pushpakumara (May 5, 1977) was born and grew up in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.  Completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura in 2005 and obtained his master’s degree in Mass Communications from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. Currently completing an advanced degree in film-making at Chung Ang University in Seoul,South Korea under the Korean government scholarship programme (KGSP). Sanjeewa underwent training in filmmaking at the (Asian Young Filmmakers Forum Jeonju, South Korea (2007), the Asian Film Academy of the Busan IFF (2009), also in South Korea, and the Berlinale Talent campus (2012) in Germany. Sanjeewa’s first feature film, Flying Fish (Igillena Maluwo) made its world premiere at the Rotterdam IFF and was nominated for the Tiger Award (2011). The film won Best Director Award at the St. Pertersburg International Film Festival “KINOFORUM;” Best Asian Film at the 4th Bengaluru International Film Festival, India; the Blue Chameleon Award,Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival “CinDi,” South Korea(2011); and the Critic’s Choice Award, New Jersey South Asian Film Festival, USA(2011). The film has been invited to more than thirty international film festivals. Sanjeewa is at present working on his second feature film “Burning Birds.”
