Sara Kern (1989) is a Slovenian-born writer and director based in Melbourne. She holds a degree in Film Directing from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (UL AGRFT). She was a recipient of Zois Scholarship for gifted students and won the national screenwriting competition (Grossmann Award) four times in succession (2010-2013). Her award-winning graduate film Maks (2013) was distributed in Japan and screened at festivals worldwide. She worked for several years as a screenwriter and director for Slovenian National Television’s Children’s and Youth Programme, before moving to Australia. Her second short Good Luck Orlo (2016) premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival. Other festivals include Toronto IFF, Chicago IFF, Seattle IFF, Palm Springs ISFF, Encounters ISFF, Leeds IFF, Premier Plans D’Angers IFF and SEMINCI Valladolid. The film won awards at VIS Vienna Shorts, Athens Film + Video Festival Ohio, FICBUEU, and from Slovenian Directors Guild. Kern attended TIFF Talent Lab 2017 with the support of Screen Australia. She is currently developing her debut feature Azra Nadine through Cannes’ Cinefondation Residence and Torino Film Lab. The project is produced by Gal Greenspan (AU).
