His mother is unstable, awful, somewhat schizophrenic. She tries to kill herself when Joe has an accident and temporarily loses his sight. He is now completely dependant on her and is forced to stay in an apartment on the 23rd floor of an eastern concrete block; her ivory tower. Their inability to communicate leads to physical attraction; war games: Joe has to leave, wants to take a plane, somewhere. They force each other into a showdown about love, responsibility and choice.
