THE STRANGER
A Nazi war criminal (Welles) is living a quiet life in a peaceful Connecticut town when an FBI agent (Robinson) tracks him down. Though the film was long regarded as an impersonal Hollywood commission, it bears the filmmaker’s feverish stamp. Made between The Magnificent Ambersons and The Lady from Shanghai, the thriller morphs into a Freudian melodrama. A fascinating exploration of evil from start to finish.
