During World War I, a woman on a train returning from the Italian lakes thinks back on the adventure she has just lived through. The previous day a storm forced her to seek refuge in a Casino. She sees a young gambler who fascinates her. Having lost heavily she follows him, worried he will take his own life. Going against her class restrictions, she experiences an unforgettable ‘brief encounter’ with this German deserter: The most intense 24 hours of her life.
