Recognised during his lifetime as “the worst director of all time”, Ed Wood was one of the most original, emotional and colourful of Hollywood directors. Rejected both by the system and the critics, he made his career aside from the studios, using innumerable tricks and undying energy to produce films in four or five days without money, but full of crazy inspiration, obscure prophecies, naïve poetry and unintentional ludicrous effects. A workaholic with contagious enthusiasm, he was probably the first independent film-maker of his generation, and stays, without a doubt, the hardest to define. Sincere, candid and generous, he was also the friend and supporter of Bela Lugosi during the last years of Bela’s life.
