EL BAÑO DEL PAPA
1988. The announcement of the Pope’s visit has the inhabitants of Melo particularly agitated: it is in their small town that Pope John Paul the II will begin his tour of Uruguay. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend. The more humble residents think this visit will be miraculous- not only for their families, but also their pocketbooks. Everyone has the same idea: to sell sandwiches and drinks to the crowds coming to welcome the Pope. Beto, a small time smuggler who scrapes a living from his trips by bicycle to the Brazilian border, decides to build a toilet in front of his house and rent it out to the visitors. Naïve and full of hope, Beto dreams of buying a motorcycle; his daughter, Silvia, aspires to pursue studies in the capital. The Pope arrives.
