Award for Best Actor 1987
During the time of Chekhov, from whom this story is freely taken, the film relates the meeting between a shy young Russian woman and a pleasure-seeking dweller of a spa-town in Italy. Madly in love, he follows her as far as Russia, but being as he is, cunning, childish, weak and innocent, he finally betrays her. So, the nostalgic images remain: eyes fearful with love; the white snout of the little dog, messenger of the lovers; the haunting song of the gypsies in the fog at daybreak.
