Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Alexander Payne has a Master’s in cinema from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1996, he directed Citizen Ruth, his first feature film, and followed it up with Election, which earned him Best Screenplay from the Writers Guild of America and the New York Film Critics Circle, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In 2002, About Schmidt was screened as a preview at the Festival de Cannes before opening the New York Film Festival.
Sideways, in 2004, and his most recent film The Descendants, 2011, each won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and were nominated in four other categories, including Best Film Editing and Best Director.
