Zhang Ziyi was born in Beijing where very early on she entered the Dance Academy, before studying at the Central Drama College. Revealed by Zhang Yimou in The Road Home (1998), she delivered a critically-acclaimed performance in Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Out of Competition at Cannes, 2000). In 2003, she starred in Zhang Yimou's Hero (2002) and Lou Ye's Purple Butterfly (Competition, 2003). Her grace and intense acting have already earned her several distinctions such as: BAFTA and a Golden Globe nomination for Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha (2005); Best Actress Award at the 2005 Hong Kong Film Awards for Wong Kar Wai's 2046 (Competition, 2004); and BAFTA nomination for House of Flying Daggers by Zhang Yimou (Out of Competition, 2004). Her most recent movies: Chen Kaige’s Mei Lanfang and Jin Yimeng’s Sophie’s Revenge (2009).
