Abel Davos, a gangster sentenced to death and a refugee in Italy, decides to return clandestinely to France. But he is surprised by customs officers and a shooting breaks out during which his wife and his accomplice are killed. Back in Paris, alone with his children, Abel calls on his friends Riton and Fargier, in Paris, who cannot come themselves but send him a safe man, Eric Stark, with an ambulance.
