LUCKY LUCIANO
“Lucky Luciano” is the third of Francesco Rosi’s film starring Gian Maria Volonté: as well as for “Salvatore Giuliano” and “Il caso Mattei” (The Mattei Affair), the main charachter triggers the inquiry on the intricacy of the Italian society and the tangles between authorities and powers. “Gian Maria Volonté reached an almost total identification with his Lucky Luciano character. Volonté could pull out of Luciano all those ambiguities that I needed to draw an obscure, silent character who was still in power but knew he was not the authority he used to be. Gian Maria had become Luciano himself.” Francesco Rosi in “Io lo chiamo cinematografo”, F. Rosi – G. Tornatore, Mondadori 2012.
