For over 40 years, Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark have remained friends and pen pals. During the span of their friendship, Shepard became a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and an Academy Award®-nominated actor, and Dark lived a quieter life as a homebody who floated through a series of odd jobs. When Dark married an older woman named Scarlett Jones, Shepard married Scarlett’s daughter, and the two couples lived together for over a decade. After Shepard’s marriage ended and he left their shared home to run off with Jessica Lange, it was Dark who helped raise his son. The two men are brought together over an eighteen-month period to sift through their 40-plus years of correspondence for a book project.
